Prepping for Prom
January is admittedly sort of a ridiculous time of year to already be thinking about prom. Ridiculous, dear reader, is just the way I roll.
You see, after a wonderful winter break back in Portland with all my friends (and following a furiously crafty couple of months getting presents ready for people), things felt a bit empty back here in Austin without something to work on. I'd been toying around with ideas for the next big event I'd be going to back in Portland, which is Just People's (my boyfriend Peter's band's) prom. It's prom. But for grown ups. Sponsored by a whiskey company. Wahoo! Everyone makes super good decisions at this prom, let me tell you.
I usually attempt to go classy for these sorts of things (without being boring). I'd wrestled with a she-wolf of a Vogue pattern for New Year's and wanted something simple. I was inspired by a photo I Pinterest-ed (verb? yes. verb.) upon of Olivia Palermo and finally decided upon an early sixties-inspired knee-length dress with a high front, long sleeves and plunging back (a la Eve Kendall's rose dress from North by Northwest). I've never really gone sixties before, so it'll be fun to see how the styling works out. In any case, two days after I came up with the idea the dress was finished, which goes to show you that obviously my teachers here aren't giving me enough homework.
Some pictures of the inspiration:
In retaliation against my last attempt at wrestling through a Vogue pattern, I was almost about to try to wing this dress with a pattern of my own, but found that the 1084 pattern was almost exactly what the doctor ordered. I altered the back so that it was open down to the waistline.
And how did it turn out, you ask? Well, you'll just have to stay tuned!....till May. Poop.
